Norfolk road safety champion awarded by the Prime Minister for her efforts

By David Brown on October 8, 2014

A woman has been hailed a road safety champion for her efforts in promoting road safety around the country after a childhood car accident left her paralysed from the chest down. Jordan Bone, 24, has been awarded the ‘Points of Light Prime Minister Award which recognises volunteers who inspire others and make changes within their community. Miss Bone of Kings Lynn was involved in a serious car accident at the age of 15 when the car she was a passenger in skidded on a wet road, landing on its roof. The other passengers and driver were uninjured but the accident left Miss Bone with a category six neck break meaning she is unable to use all four of her limbs.

Prime Minister David Cameron hailed her a ‘truly courageous woman’ and Jordan has said that she is thrilled to be recognised for her work. She volunteers across Norfolk hosting a variety of road safety workshops to young people and sharing her story to educate young road users on the potential hazards on the road. Nine years after her accident, Miss Bone has said she is determined not to let the incident prevent her from following her dreams and delivers focus groups on road safety including Streetlife Driving School. She has also campaigned to transport ministers and MPs about road safety issues that need to be tackled.

    Importance of road safety campaigning

A road safety champion like Miss Bone can make a huge difference by using campaigns and education to help young drivers see the consequences of dangerous driving. Simply driving over the speed limit on an icy road can cause a serious accident and could cost someone their life. Although many people are extremely vigilant on the roads, there are still many who do not heed road safety rules which are there for yours and other drivers’ protection. Should you have been seriously injured in a car accident then you may be able to win a compensation payout if someone else was negligent on the road.
