Nightmare trip leads to payout for holidaymakers

By Rob Steen on April 19, 2015

A nightmare trip to Egypt has resulted in a settlement being paid to around 70 people who went on holiday there. One family has managed to secure a payout following the upsetting incident, which occurred when they visited an Egyptian resort. The family suffered from a severe case of gastric illness. While few details were given with regard to this particular family, it is understood they have two children and hail from Sheffield.

The resort involved was a four-star resort in the popular location of Sharm El-Sheikh. At the time of the incident it was known as the Tropicana Sea Splash Resort. However it is now renamed as the Sea Beach Resort and Aqua Park. While approximately 70 people were affected by the outbreak some were more severely affected than others and required medical treatment in order to recover. Some were found to be suffering from cryptosporidium and salmonella poisoning, both of which can be severe in some cases.

The tour operator involved in the case was First Choice Holidays. They have not admitted or denied any liability in the case but lawyers have been able to win payments for their clients by way of compensation.

How serious can food poisoning abroad be?

The UK has strict laws with regard to the handling and preparation of food. However, as many of us know, travelling abroad may take us to countries where such laws are not as strict as they are here. It should be noted that the vast majority of businesses are of excellent quality in many countries, but this is not always the case. Indeed in some instances conditions could be very bad indeed. In this case raw sewage was spotted near the kids’ pool and undercooked food was served as well as cross-contamination occurring.
