Meningitis error led to brain damage

Meningitis error led to brain damage

Colchester Hospital has been found guilty of delays with regards to providing meningitis treatment for a nine-year-old girl. Although they have apologised for this mistake, Ellie Sutton is now facing a lifetime of care requirement because she never fully recovered from this life-threatening condition. Hospital guidelines dictate that any child with a temperature over 38C should be kept in hospital for regular observation. Ellie had a recorded temperature of 39.9C and despite this dangerously high temperature, she was still discharged. Her parents returned with Ellie later on and her medial review was further delayed. The hospital has admitted that faster investigation would have meant that Ellie would not be facing the lifetime battle with brain damage now ahead of her. A lump sum of £2.4 million was made as well as lifelong annual payments and therapy treatments. Although this will never completely make amends for such medical negligence, it is hoped that this financial payment will at least make her family’s future responsibilities a little less difficult to face. Ellie’s security has been catered for but this dreadful oversight is a warning sign to other hospitals that these procedures should never be overlooked in future cases of potential meningitis in children.

    Medical negligence has serious consequences

If you, a friend or relative has been the victim of a meningitis error like the tragic case above, you may be able to make a claim for financial compensation. If you have reason to believe that any unnecessary suffering or health deterioration may have taken place due to a possible error of judgement in the hospital, Accident Advice Helpline would love to hear from you. Dealing with such a life-threatening condition is hard enough without having to be put at further risk because of possible incompetence and negligent behaviour in the hospital.
