    Medical negligence: the facts

Getting the wrong medical treatment or being a victim of medical negligence is one of the most distressing things that can happen in life and can leave you in a very difficult situation. Many people are hesitant to make a compensation claim because they realise that medical professionals work hard to help us and usually get it right. It is often only through such claims, however, that serious problems come to light. By claiming, you can help to protect other patients, as well as securing the money you need to improve your quality of life.

Medical negligence is a complex issue in law and only a specialist solicitor can expect to bring a successful claim. Fortunately, we have a network of such solicitors across the UK. Give us a call today and we can put you in touch with someone who can help you. There will be no upfront charges and if you win your case, the solicitor’s fees will normally be paid by the other side.

    What is medical negligence?

Medical negligence does not just apply to doctors. It can concern any medical professional, such as a dentist or a nurse. It can involve incorrect treatment, prescription of the wrong medication, misdiagnosis, or a mistake by a surgeon. If the action or inaction of a trained medical professional who was responsible for your care has led to you being injured or becoming ill, you are entitled to compensation. You may also be able to make a claim if you were ill to begin with and your condition has significantly worsened because of how you were treated or neglected.

How a medical negligence claim can help you

If you’ve been a victim of medical negligence, making a successful claim can help you to put your life back together. It will cover the cost of any loss of earnings you incurred if you had to take time off work due to injury or illness. If you have been left unable to work because of what has happened, it can provide money for you to live on in the longer term. Should you need adaptations to your home to help you cope with a disability that you have developed as a result, you can also claim for the cost of those. You don’t need to wait until after your claim to make such adaptations, but you should save receipts and remember that nobody can guarantee your claim will be successful.

Medical negligence claims are also designed to compensate you for the suffering and stress you’ve been through. If your claim is successful, you can expect to receive some money that you can use to treat yourself, in order to start feeling better about your life.
