A man whose dream holiday was ruined as a result of contracting severe sickness and diarrhoea has finally received a payout from the tour operator who arranged the break. Thomas Cook has been ordered to pay over £17,000 in compensation to Paul Hughes, whose holiday with his wife took place back in January 2011.
The couple stayed at the Iberostar Daiquiri Hotel, a four-star location in Cuba. Unfortunately, the conditions there were less than satisfactory. The couple spent two weeks there and witnessed hygiene conditions that were far below acceptable standards. Mr Hughes fell ill and suffered horrendous diarrhoea and sickness which continued for weeks.
Even after the couple returned home, Paul suffered from ongoing symptoms relating to his holiday illness. This led him to see his GP, who gave him some advice on how to manage the symptoms he was experiencing. The incident has led him to avoid eating out at all, since he is nervous the same thing will happen to him again. The compensation payment was agreed upon to reflect the ongoing suffering Paul has gone through, as well as the ruined holiday he and his wife had.
How severe can a holiday illness be?
There are several ways you can catch sickness and diarrhoea in these situations. Poorly cooked, stored and prepared food can carry bugs and cause illness. Areas that should be cleaned and disinfected can also carry germs and bugs. Sometimes, a swimming pool will not be properly chlorinated, causing illness as a result.
