    Man claims compensation after his hand is sliced off by industrial machinery

    Alec Brackenbury, an engineer for Heinz, who worked at the company’s Westwick plant in Norfolk suffered horrific injuries caused by a potato peeling machine.

    The 49 year old engineer was carrying out routine maintenance on the industrial machinery in June 2013 – the peeler had been switched off beforehand and Mr Brackenbury climbed down to collect a bolt which had dropped into the machine’s slurry pump. The pump, responsible for clearing away peelings, was connected to a different circuit and started running whilst the engineer’s right hand was still in it, slicing off his hand at the wrist. He spent two weeks in hospital and has been left with a mechanical claw in place of his hand.

    A major health and safety investigation was carried out which discovered that even though the pump and peeler were part of different systems, it appeared they were on the same circuit. No safety grate was in place to prevent people reaching into the pump.

    Food giant Heinz admitted health and safety breaches and was fined £50,000 with costs of £9,661. Mr Brackenbury is pursuing a civil claim against the company; as a mechanical and electrical engineer, the impact of the loss of his hand in the industrial machinery has been devastating both personally and professionally.
