Legionella Awareness Training

Legionnaire’s disease is an infection that affects the lungs and it can be fatal. An outbreak in the Seventies led to the bacterium that causes it being discovered for the first time and this was when it was named. The bacteria exists in a variety of water sources, which means any workplace that has water sources, such as cooling towers and other similar equipment and areas, could be at risk of the disease.

As such it is wise for all workers who may come into contact with the bacteria to take Legionella Awareness Training. This training provides a basic competency in this area of knowledge, providing information on the disease, the regulations surrounding it and how to control it so the risks are minimised as much as possible. Clearly this is not a course that is required in every workplace, but if systems that handle water of varying amounts are present then it is wise to ensure all employees learn more about the risks.

Can the potential hazards presented by Legionella bacteria be eradicated?

Since the bacterium has the potential exist in places where water systems are present, it is difficult to completely get rid of the potential for it to appear. However, such courses do maximise the odds of preventing its occurrence as well as controlling it when it does appear.

Thankfully it is relatively rare for an outbreak of the disease to occur. However, if it does occur it has the potential to affect many people. With the potential to kill some of those who might be found to be suffering from it, the more we can do to protect those working in potentially hazardous workplaces the better.
