Research suggests that a slip and trip are the most common form of workplace accident and one of the most commonly reported incidents among members of the public.
Slip and trip figures
The latest figures from the Health and Safety Executive revealed that 40 people lost their lives last year as a direct result of a slip and trip in the workplace and more than 30,000 people were forced to take at least three consecutive days off work after slipping, tripping or falling.
In the last year alone, 15,000 people suffered major injuries and 95 per cent of people who had a major fall fractured at least one bone.
The cost of falls
Figures from the HSE show that falls cost firms and health services millions of pounds each year. The estimated cost to employers is £512 million and the National Health Service spent more than £133 million treating patients for injuries caused by falls last year.
Slip, trip and fall claims represent more than a third of personal injury claims.
In addition to financial costs to businesses and health organisations, individuals often incur costs as a result of their accident. Such costs may include having to take time off work and lose earnings as well as travel and hospital expenses.
Individuals may also require additional help around the house, changes may need to be made to their home to make it more accessible and loved ones may need to adapt their work schedule to allow them to provide care.
There are also mental health implications, as many people who suffer accidents and have to give up work and sacrifice their independence suffer from depression, anxiety and low self-esteem.
