Knee cartilage damage

What is cartilage?

Cartilage is the tough, yet flexible, tissue which can be found throughout the human body. It basically has two main functions, one is to act as a sort of shock absorber to protect the body from impacts (such as occurs through impact sports such as running), and the second is to act as a mould.

It covers the surface of joints.  As a result of this it allows bones to slide over one another in a smooth friction free motion.

There are three types of cartilage:

  • Elastic – this is the most springy type and is found in the nose, outside of the ears and the back of the throat
  • Fibrocartilage – this is the toughest type and is found in between the vertebrae
  • Hyaline cartilage – this is both springy and tough and found between the ribs

All of these types of cartilage can be damaged if you are involved in an accident or sustain an injury.
