There are potentially many situations in which school children could be injured in some way while they are at school. However, for the most part these situations do not occur. This is the case in Wales just as it is everywhere else, although injuries in schools in Wales have resulted in a six-figure collection of pay-outs in recent years.
Figures released showing pay-outs for the past five years in the country have revealed that more than £800,000 has been paid to settle a number of claims for a variety of councils in the country. These relate to local authorities including Neath Port Talbot, Bridgend and Vale of Glamorgan. Among the claims that received compensation payments were a number involving head injuries, defects to the school buildings and instances of negligence.
The grand total for all the compensation claims paid involving injuries in schools over the past five year period was £811,834.86. This figure includes legal costs as well as the compensation amounts themselves. It has surprised many but it also highlights the types of accidents that could potentially occur in schools if the proper steps are not taken to keep everyone safe.
Could you make a claim for an injury suffered by your child?
Most schools are incredibly safe places. However as we can see here, there are situations in which injuries have the potential to occur. These situations, if they do result in an injury, can lead to compensation claims.
Injuries in schools can be painful and can even result in long-standing problems for the future too. Compensation is determined by a number of factors but there must be proof that negligence was a determining factor in the situation when assessing whether or not compensation can be paid.
