Injured carpenter wins compensation for TV studio injury

By David Brown on August 9, 2014

A carpenter who suffered a TV studio injury has won £10,000 in compensation. Work was being carried out in the studio to convert a store room into a space for use by the TV presenters working at the studio. However, a trench was dug in the floor by contractors and was left uncovered. Although the carpenter came into the studio to work and alerted the manager about the health and safety hazard, it remained uncovered and the carpenter tripped and fell into the trench causing his injuries. He suffered torn cartilage in his right knee but the injury failed to heal after two operations. The carpenter is no longer able to work full time and has to strap his knee regularly.

The TV studio initially denied responsibility claiming the carpenter was at fault, but the claimant was able to provide witnesses to support his claim for compensation. A TV studio injury like this one has left a reliable employee unable to work regularly resulting in a loss of wages. Compensation can help with this as well as the cost of any lifestyle changes you may have to make if injured at work.

    Accidents and injuries at work

Slips, trips and falls are common accidents but they can cause serious injury. Health and safety training for all workers and contractors is important to help reduce the risk of injury or accident in the workplace and all employers must make this a top priority. Employers have a duty of care to their employees and anyone visiting the workplace, but any failure in this can cause a life-altering injury. Simple maintenance of the building and equipment can also help reduce the chances of injury. If you have had an accident at work due to someone else’s negligence, you may be able to make a compensation claim where you have been injured.
