"If you've been injured through no fault of your own you could be entitled to compensation. If you're unsure if you could claim, I recommend you call Accident Advice Helpline."

    Esther Rantzen

Were you injured in an air accident?

You would imagine that taking a relaxing flight on a passenger plane would not usually result in receiving an injury, but that is simply not the case. You could be sitting down and quietly minding your business when all of a sudden a cup of scalding coffee is accidentally dropped into your lap. If this happened to you, you may be able to claim for financial compensation.

    What are air accidents?

An air accident is something that happens to you whilst on board a plane and you become injured through no fault of your own. As mentioned previously, it may be hard to envisage having an accident in such a small place, but they certainly do happen. Here is a short list of the most common of these mishaps:

    • Getting your legs and hands caught in your chair when trying to move.
    • Hurting your hand in the overhead compartment
    • Being hit by the food and drinks trolley whilst sitting down
    • Having hot drinks spilt on you
    • Being hit on the head or body by a falling object from the overhead locker
    • Tripping over the carpet whilst walking along the aisle

What to do if you are injured whilst flying

Once you have recovered from the shock of the accident, it is very important that you ask for medical attention straight away, particularly if your head has been injured. Keep a full record of any treatment and attention that you receive from the accident.

The same goes for any expenses that follow – please ensure that you note these down in detail. Please try to get contact details from any witnesses if possible. The airline has a duty of care to its passengers and if this has not taken place, they may be liable for your injury.
