Improper installation led to falling sign injury

By David Brown on July 18, 2014

A pedestrian was injured when a falling sign struck the unfortunate individual in Falmouth town centre. This happened on November 29th 2011 and New Life Signs were responsible for the poorly installed 27 kilogram sign. The Swindon based firm were taken to court as a result of investigations carried out after the falling sign injury accident took place. The sheer weight of the sign dictated that the installation should have been installed with greater support. The attachment to a thin fascia MDF board by using screws was seen to be the main cause of the accident. As a result, Bodmin Magistrates Court ruled that the Swindon based firm were liable for the associated costs of the case. A sign of this size and weight could have easily caused a serious injury and possible even death. New Life Signs were deemed to have failed in providing adequate duty of care whilst installing the offending sign. Section 3 of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 was brought into play when deciding on the actual offence caused by the Swindon company.
