Humberside Police compensation claims on the rise

By David Brown on July 18, 2014

Humberside Police have paid out over £55,000 in compensation for accidents since May last year. This alarming trend was perhaps highlighted by the case of an officer who broke their toe after dropping a table on their foot. This payout was for £5,748.57 and there have been many other cases that resulted in payments for less than life-threatening injuries. A spokesman for the Humberside Police explained that these payments are a result of officers and staff being exposed to risk of injury whilst on duty. Since 2010, the Humberside Police force has paid out more than a quarter of a million pounds in compensation as a result of 55 claims from their staff. It is believed that civilians will be surprised by the sheer amount of cases and associated payout costs now that these statistics have been revealed publicly. Another Humberside Police compensation case saw a police officer receive £4,800 in compensation after slipping and breaking their arm on ice. The Humberside Police force paid a total of almost £12,000 including costs. In these cases, facing unnecessary risks at work is a consideration and compensation may be awarded for individual accident circumstances.
