How much can I claim for whiplash injuries?

If you’ve been in a car crash you might be wondering ‘how much can I claim for whiplash injuries’?

‘How much can I claim for whiplash injuries’ is a phrase that a lot of people seem to have been typing into their search boxes as Britain has been called the ‘whiplash capital of Europe.’

That is because we have around three whiplash claims for every accident that’s reported. Since 1st April 2013 there have been stricter controls on claims for whiplash injuries after a road accident. However, you can get whiplash after a fall or after being hit on the head by a heavy object.

What is whiplash?

Whiplash is an injury to the neck which happens when the head is jolted violently, and moves from side to side or backwards and forwards. This violent movement of the head can damage the ligaments and tendons in the neck.

Common symptoms of whiplash include headaches, pain in the neck and stiffness which make it painful to move. You will probably also experience tenderness over the neck muscles. Sometimes it takes between six and twelve hours after the accident for these symptoms to develop.

Mild whiplash will get better on its own after a few days or weeks, without the need for treatment, but chronic whiplash is a different matter.

How much can I claim for whiplash injuries?

Apart from claiming compensation for the injury you can also claim for the pain, distress and suffering caused by your injury and if you have chronic whiplash this could be very painful and distressing as it can cause anxiety and depression.

You may not be able to perform those daily tasks that you could do so easily before our injury and you may have to take a lot of time off work. Eventually you may have to retire on the grounds of ill health.

You can claim for loss of earnings caused by your injury, as long as the accident in which you sustained it was not your fault. You can also receive compensation for the loss of quality of life caused by your injury.
