Holiday vomiting bug affects dozens staying on Spanish islands

By David Brown on August 21, 2014

Every summer we hear of a holiday vomiting bug affecting holidaymakers somewhere abroad and this year is no different. As many as 70 tourists from Britain are making compensation claims after two incidents struck down dozens of people in two separate locations.

The first occurred in Mallorca at the Club Mac Alcudia. The bookings were made with Thomas Cook and around 50 people suffered the symptoms of the vomiting bug. Another 20 people were affected by a similar bug when they stayed at a hotel called Stil Victoria Playa which is located in Menorca. This holiday was booked via Thomson.

Many holidaymakers complained about the state of the hotels they stayed in. Poor conditions were frequently mentioned by those who had their holidays ruined as a consequence of the bug. One little girl, aged three, ended up in hospital on a drip because she was so ill from the effects of the bug. Many others suffered sickness and diarrhoea and experienced ruined holidays as well. The mother of the little girl said she had been offered compensation by Club Mac Alcudia but this did not amount to more than a third of the total cost of the holiday. It is no surprise that so many are seeking compensation.

Could a holiday vomiting bug mean you can claim compensation as well?

We all get ill from time to time. However the big question is whether or not the illness was someone else’s fault. Poorly cooked, stored or heated food and poorly maintained and cleaned areas are typical of the problems that can lead to bugs and other illnesses on holiday complexes such as the ones mentioned here. If you have evidence of negligence and you’ve suffered in this way, it is worth finding out more about where you stand legally.
