Holiday sickness bug leaves over 100 British tourists ill in Egypt

A holiday sickness bug has struck the four-star Coral Sea Waterworld Complex in Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt, leaving over 100 British tourists ill. The bug, which has caused stomach cramps and diarrhoea, has left some holidaymakers on drips, with others confined to their rooms. Those affected blamed dirty utensils and poor food hygiene for the outbreak, with 50 cases reported over a 24-hour period.

Extra doctors were drafted in to help, with resort staff forced to use hand sanitisers and wear latex gloves. Many of those affected by the holiday sickness bug have taken to Trip Advisor to complain. One holidaymaker posted, “All was fine until Tuesday when I was struck down with sickness and diarrhoea for three days. Just as I was recovering from my illness, my wife was struck down with one far worse; sickness, diarrhoea, stomach cramps and fever that continued for the duration of our holiday and is still not 100 percent now.”

Research undertaken earlier this month revealed stomach bugs were one of the main reasons Brits made a medical claim on their travel insurance, with Spain and Egypt the top destinations for claims. Holiday operator First Choice Holidays is conducting a thorough investigation into the situation.

Have you been struck down by food poisoning on holiday?

A holiday should be a time to relax, unwind and enjoy spectacular weather and scenery. Yet if you are struck down by food poisoning on holiday, your whole break could be ruined. Symptoms of food poisoning usually appear within 24-48 hours and can include nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, diarrhoea and fever. In children, the elderly or infirm, food poisoning can be very dangerous, and if symptoms persist, medical treatment may be needed. If poor food hygiene or dirty conditions have caused your food poisoning on holiday, you may be able to claim compensation.
