Help I’ve Sprained My Ankle

Help I’ve Sprained My Ankle – What Next?

If you think that you may have sprained your ankle, there are a number of steps you can take to ensure the damage is taken care of as soon as possible. If you have sprained your ankle and the accident was not your fault, you may also be able to claim compensation using Accident Advice Helpline on 0800 689 5659.

Step One: Have I Sprained My Ankle?

Work out whether you have actually sprained your ankle or just twisted it. Although a twist can be very painful at the time, the pain will usually ease off fairly quickly and not cause you any long-term issues. A sprain will be accompanied by a lot of swelling, bruising and pain. You may feel a pop when the ankle twists. This is not serious or anything to worry about, but shows that the ligaments have actually been damaged.

Step Two: Can I Treat It at Home?

You must always try to treat a sprained ankle immediately so that it does not get worse. Raise the ankle to above the level of the heart to bring down the swelling, and compress with lots of ice. This will stop the swelling and bruising from getting too severe and also help with the pain. Compression should be secure but not too tight — restricting the blood flow to the foot will cause a number of other problems.

If you do have to wear shoes or walk around at all during the first 72 hours, ensure that you are wearing secure and comfortable shoes – no high heels and no flip flops!

Step Three: Should I See a Doctor?

If after 72 hours you have seen no improvement or are still finding the ankle very tender to walk on, it is worthwhile seeing a doctor. If your ankle has been damaged more than you suspected and needs further treatment, then the doctor will be able to diagnose this. If the injury affects your day to day life and you want to claim compensation, a doctor’s visit is necessary to diagnose the injury also.

Step Four: Can I Claim Compensation?

If you have missed work because of this injury and it was caused by the negligence of someone else, you may be able to claim compensation. Speak to Accident Advice Helpline to find out more about claiming compensation and how the team can help you.
