What is the Gas Safe Register?

What is the Gas Safe Register?

The Gas Safe Register is a list of registered gas engineers who can work legally and safely on gas appliances including cookers, boilers and fires. On 1st April 2009, the Gas Safety Register replaced CORGI as the UK’s gas registration body, and by law all gas engineers must be on the Gas Safety Register.

The Register aims to raise awareness of gas safety whilst improving and maintaining standards of gas safety. They also ensure that the 120,000 plus engineers on the Register are all qualified. They protect members of the public from unsafe gas work by providing the following:

    • Regular inspection of Gas Safety Register engineers
    • A national investigation team to track down engineers working illegally
    • Education for consumers on gas safety
    • Investigations of reports of unsafe gas work

Unqualified, unregistered gas engineers can carry out work to poor standards which can have serious consequences, such as causing an explosion or injuries. You should always check that the engineer you are using is on the Gas Safety Register before letting them work on any of your gas appliances.

Have you been injured by a negligent gas engineer?

Every year, unregistered or unqualified gas engineers cause accidents and injuries in homes and businesses across the UK. Hiring an unregistered engineer could mean that your boiler or cooker is fitted incorrectly. This could cause a gas leak which could lead to an explosion, or it could cause carbon monoxide to leak into your home. Carbon monoxide gas is colourless and odourless, it’s known as ‘the silent killer’.

Many people have succumbed to carbon monoxide poisoning in their sleep, which is why it is so important to use a registered, qualified gas engineer who can work safely on your gas appliances. It may be cheaper to hire an unregistered engineer, but you’re putting your family at risk. If you have become ill or been injured after hiring a negligent engineer, you could claim compensation.
