    Fuel station accidents

    Flammable liquids, moving vehicles, people in a rush – it is hardly surprising that accidents can happen at a fuel station. If you have suffered an accident and you call us the first thing we will need to determine is whether a third party is at fault.

    The most common accident will be a slip or fall, causing a range of injuries from sprains to broken bones. This might be on a spilled liquid or on a wet or icy surface. There are steps the fuel company can take to avoid this. The forecourt should be regularly checked so spills can be cleared away, and the forecourt should be well lit at night so you can be aware of any hazards that could cause a trip.

    In the winter the fuel company should use grit, if necessary, to keep the forecourt clear of snow and ice. If melting snow comes into the shop this should be mopped up and appropriate warning notices should be posted if the floor remains wet.

    Petrol is a dangerous substance. It can burn if it comes into contact with your skin and can be poisonous if inhaled. The fuel company must make sure that petrol is correctly stored, that the pumps are in good working order and that any petrol spills are cleared up.

    After an accident

    As soon as you can, record as much information as possible and find out the names and contact details of any witnesses. If possible use your mobile phone to take photographs of the hazard that caused your injuries. If there is CCTV footage your lawyer may obtain a copy.
