An investigation of a fast food outlet in Walsall town centre discovered flies and rat droppings. Environmental health officers found flies on food preparation areas, crockery and equipment at Chipmasters, with rat droppings discovered in other parts of the premises.
The store was issued a Hygiene Emergency Prohibition Notice last Wednesday (22nd October) and forced to close. It is the fourth business to be closed down by Environmental Health workers within a two week period.
Health Officers closed the business after expressing concerns over the ‘filthy conditions’ for food preparation and serving. Magistrates agreed the outlet should stay closed until the problems are addressed. Flies can spread salmonella, campylobacter (the most common cause of food poisoning) and E. coli, whilst rats can carry diseases including typhus and leptospirosis.
Councillor Khizar Hussain commented, “Although there was evidence of rats present, I understand the insanitary conditions themselves were a serious cause for concern. This gives out a clear message that we will not hesitate to close a business on the grounds of cleanliness alone where warranted.”
Have you visited a dirty restaurant?
If you have become ill after eating at a restaurant and you are concerned about the cleanliness of the premises, you should report this to your local council’s environmental health department, who will usually investigate.
Restaurants and all establishments serving food have a duty to follow food hygiene procedures and keep their premises clean and sanitary at all times, so if you have noticed flies, rat droppings or other unsanitary conditions, it is worth reporting this, to prevent anyone else from suffering food poisoning.
