Five slip and trip hazards at the cinema

A night out at the cinema, whether it’s for a first date, a romantic evening or a family outing to enjoy the latest blockbuster, is almost as strong an English tradition as fish and chips and disappointing World Cups. For such a common occurrence, it may come as a surprise just how many hazards and potential causes of accidents in public there are in your local multiplex.

What hazards at the cinema can causes slips, trips and falls?

When it comes to suffering a trip or fall accident, there are considerably more potential causes than you might otherwise think. Here is a breakdown of five of the worst offenders.

  1. Stairs: Whether it’s the steps up to the entrance of the cinema itself or the often steep ascent to the screens, stairs in the cinema are an accident waiting to happen. With lots of people going up or down the same set of steps, trips and falls can happen all too easily.
  2. Wet lobby floors: Many cinemas have the same glossy, laminated flooring in the reception area. Whilst this looks smart and is easy to clean, it can also cause slip accidents. For example, say it is raining outside; residual rainwater brought in on the soles of shoes can soon turn a smart lobby into a slippery nightmare.
  3. Other people’s feet: The art of negotiating your way down the row of seats to nip to the loo once the film has started is a delicate skill. In amongst the hushed apologies and awkward shuffles, it’s important to keep your eyes on the floor to avoid potentially painful trip accidents occurring. Then you have to do it all again on the way back.
  4. Bags and other debris: Even before the lights go down and the film begins, cinemas are fairly dimly lit. This makes it all too easy for trip accidents to occur over obstacles that have been left carelessly.
  5. Spilt drinks: Whether in the lobby, on the stairs or by the doors, any spillages need to be dealt with and cleaned up as soon as possible before slip accidents can occur.
