First aid procedures everyone should know

Whilst you don’t have to take a first aid course, there are some basic first aid procedures that it is helpful to know in case of an emergency. You may or may not have a dedicated, trained First Aider at your place of work, but your employer needs to have a first aid box and somebody who is responsible for it. In the event of an emergency, basic first aid procedures such as the ones below will be useful until help arrives.

Basic first aid procedures

Here are some of the basic first aid skills it helps to know in an emergency:

  • CPR – you can find information about how to perform CPR in books and online, but always call an ambulance immediately if somebody has stopped breathing. You should try to ensure the person is on their back on the floor and tilt their head, to make sure their tongue isn’t obstructing the airway.
  • First aid for bleeding – minor cuts will simply require washing and the application of a plaster, but with deeper cuts, pressure with a sterile or clean cloth to stem bleeding is needed. A bandage can be applied once bleeding has stopped or slowed, but many deeper wounds may require medical attention.
  • Nosebleeds – nostrils should be pinched shut for 10 minutes whilst the patient breathes through their mouth. If this doesn’t stop the nosebleed, they may need to see a doctor.
  • Choking – learning how to perform the Heimlich Manoeuvre could save someone’s life if they are choking, as it dislodges the object stuck in their throat. This is relatively easy to learn and an essential first aid skill.
  • Shock – you should know what to do in case of shock, as this can often occur after an accident. Lie the patient on their back and try to keep their feet raised, if possible, making sure they are warm and comfortable. You should avoid giving them food or drink, as there is a risk of choking, and always call an ambulance, as a person suffering from shock will need medical attention.
