The primary survey is a first aid procedure that should be carried out to help you assess a situation and determine what treatment is needed. There are four steps to the primary survey – Danger, Response, Airway and Breathing (DRAB).
- First, check to see if either you or the casualty are in immediate danger, for example from a busy road, and make the situation safe
- Then check for a response if they appear unconscious. Gently shake their shoulders whilst shouting, “Can you hear me?” and “Open your eyes.” If there is no response, shout for help and open the casualty’s airway. If they respond, leave them in the position you found them in and get help if needed. Monitor their vital signs – pulse and breathing – and treat any condition such as bleeding
- Open the casualty’s airway by putting one hand on their forehead. Tilt their head back and lift the chin with two fingers to move their tongue away from the back of their mouth
- Check they’re breathing; look to see if their chest is rising and falling, listen for breathing and feel for breath against your cheek – do this for no more than 10 seconds. If they’re breathing normally, place them in the recovery position. If they’re not breathing, begin CPR and call 999
Injured during first aid
If you are injured whilst somebody is giving you first aid, it can be tempting to blame the first-aider. It’s important to establish whether negligence has occurred – for example, has somebody who has been trained in first aid failed to carry out the primary survey and commence CPR? Depending on the extent of your injuries, you may be awarded compensation for pain and suffering, any loss of earnings resulting from time off work and also compensation for the cost of any medical treatment.
