Four years ago, Stephen Beever, 54, from Rotherham, South Yorkshire and his six children went on holiday as part of a group of 16 to Bulgaria’s Royal Park Hotel. The trip quickly turned into a holiday from hell and the children are still suffering from their illnesses today.
The 16-strong group which included Stephen’s brother and his wife and children suffered so badly that they still get stomach cramps to this day.
They were on holiday at the Black Sea resort of Elenite in 2010 and Mr Beever said that the standards of the hotel were ‘appalling’ and ‘unhygienic’ leading to illness throughout the family. They stated that food was left uncovered for long periods of time and it appeared to be re-heated and re-used at meal times. Flies were seen on the meals and cockroaches in the restaurant and the rooms.
Some of the children, Lucy Beever, 7, and her cousin Liam Westby, 12 were celebrating their birthdays on the holiday but didn’t get the celebration they wanted after spending the majority of the break in their rooms. The family suffered extreme abdominal pain, vomiting and the children suffered from high fevers.
Ongoing health issues
Mr Beever said “Our holiday at the Royal Park Hotel was a disaster and has caused a lot of problems following our return.” He spoke of his daughter Lucy and said she was crying continuously on holiday due to the pain in her abdomen and could not eat or even keep liquids down.
He went on to say that on returning, “at least once a week, Lucy will suffer with stomach cramps that cause her pain and distress. It has affected her life and her confidence irreparably, and she is reluctant to get involved with after school groups because of her on-going troubles”.
The family have just been awarded £190,000 in compensation costs because of the illness they sustained on holiday and the reoccurring illnesses they now suffer. The six children were awarded a total of £90,000 and the adults were given nearly £30,000.
Compensation has also been completed for another group of more than 280 holidaymakers who suffered similar illnesses at the same hotel in 2008. The group were awarded their pay-out two years ago totalling hundreds of thousands of pounds.
