Meniere’s disease is a condition which affects the inner ear. The sufferer usually begins to feel symptoms of vertigo, hearing loss or tinnitus accompanied by a feeling of pressure within the ear. The symptoms usually appear in bursts which can last for two or three hours. Those with the condition may experience a feeling like the room is spinning which can last up to 20 minutes per episode and sufferers may hear noises which originate from within the ear. There may also be some feelings of nausea, vomiting or dizziness. A GP who suspects the condition may refer you to an ear, nose and throat specialist who will conduct some hearing tests along with checks for balance. The hearing tests may not help to diagnose the condition in its early stages because many sufferers have very little hearing loss to begin with. The specialist may also conduct an MRI scan to detect any problems with the brain that could be causing your symptoms. Although the symptoms often progress by themselves, a failure to diagnose Meniere’s disease can result in faster progression and lack of support and treatment.

The disease is not fatal but it can lead to problems leading a normal life. Medication can be given to prevent attacks and to help with the symptoms.
