A worker was left with burns to his head and hands following an explosion at a vehicle seat-making company’s premises, a court has been told.
The Gwent-based firm, Sears Manufacturing Company (Europe) Limited, has been fined £40,000 and ordered to pay £12,010 in costs after admitting breaches of the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations.
Cwmbran Magistrates’ Court heard the accident at work happened in January 2015.
‘Suitable control measures weren’t in place’
The operator had been working on a process that involved the use of a highly flammable release agent to stop foam sticking to seat moulds.
But during the process, the release agent had ignited causing his industrial explosion injury.
The explosion was investigated by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
The court heard its investigation had established that the release agent ignited because of a failure by the firm, of Ebbw Vale, Gwent, to have suitable control measures in place.
