Taking precautions for your car journey: emergency kits
Be sure you are ready to take on the roads this winter by putting together an emergency kit for your car journey. In the case of an accident on the road, emergency kits are basically a collection of essential items that are highly useful – and sometimes life-saving – in the case of an road-related incident.
It is recommended that you include:
- De-icer and scrapers
- Warning triangle
- Car hammer
- Tyre pressure gauge
- Foot pump
- Tow rope
- Torch with spare batteries, or a wind up torch
- Change of clothes
- First aid kit
- Weather appropriate footwear, for example boots, wellies or snow boots
- Portable phone charger or spare battery pack
- Disposable camera with flash
In respect of the particularly bad weather the UK can experience, in 2011, the BBC reported that the British Red Cross also suggest that the following are also considered essential items:
- A list of emergency contact numbers
- Any essential medication, some toiletries and a first aid kit
- Three days supply of bottled water and ready-to-eat foods that keep
- Copies of important documents like insurance policies and birth certificates
- Pencil, paper, a penknife and a whistle
