Engineer jailed after using alias for illegal gas work

A man who used an alias to carry out illegal gas work has been jailed for 18 months.

Magistrates heard that unregistered Neil Simon McKimm – trading as Macs Plumbing Services and under the alias of Robert Welsh – deceived customers by pretending to be an engineer who was on the Gas Safe Register.

KcKimm, of Darlington, County Durham, was found guilty of breaching the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations and the Health and Safety at Work Act.

Teeside Magistrates’ Court heard that McKimm carried out illegal gas work – including the servicing of boilers – on three occasions.

    ‘Lawbreakers will be pursued’

He had repeatedly falsely pretended to be a registered engineer, and signed official records in the name of an engineer who was Gas Safe registered, magistrates were told.

Following the court case, Health and Safety Executive (HSE) inspector Paul Wilson said it is essential for people’s safety that gas work is only carried out by engineers who are properly registered with Gas Safe.

He added that those who flout the law will continue to be “robustly” pursued by the HSE.
