An elderly Scottish couple have had their personal injury claim turned down after authorities denied the validity of their accounts.
Alan and Sylvia Cantwell were attacked by machete-wielding robbers at their retirement home in Bulgaria last year. The couple took photos of the injuries sustained by Mr Cantwell in particular, which clearly show that he had sustained extensive bruising to his whole body, as well as a ruptured blood vessel in his right eye and the loss of some of his teeth.
Despite producing the evidence to the Bulgarian authorities, the The National Council for Assistance and Compensation denied that the robbers had inflicted grievous bodily harm on Mr Cantwell and are refusing to pay the couple injury compensation.
The couple, who discovered their dog almost beheaded after the attackers fled, have had to move home to Dundee and are living in a caravan, having sold their family home to fund the purchase and renovation of the Bulgarian cottage.
