Councils launch World Cup drink-driving campaigns

By David Brown on July 12, 2014

Councils across the country have been launching high-profile drink-driving campaigns to try and stop people from driving when they have been drinking. The World Cup is likely to result in more people risking their lives – and the lives of other people – by driving while they have alcohol in their system.

Thames Valley Police and Bedfordshire Police have also joined in the campaign, which has seen councils such as Slough Borough Council highlighting the dangers of drinking. This is particularly noteworthy because some of the matches during the competition will not be starting until around 11pm local time. This means some people may drink in the early hours and then assume they are fit to drive the next morning, when this is not necessarily the case.

Recommendations include nominating a designated driver who will refrain from drinking, as well as to assess whether or not you will be driving early the next day. If you will, you should refrain from drinking as well.

Have you been injured in a drink-driving incident?

Even if you are a responsible driver and you never drink alcohol when you drive, other people could still cause you to have an accident. You may also be affected if you are a pedestrian and you are involved in an accident that was caused by a drunk driver.

It might seem easy to have a quick drink and then to drive afterwards, but as we have seen many times before the consequences can be devastating. This is why those who are injured in an accident they did not cause have the right to consider launching a compensation claim against those who can be proven to be responsible.
