You’d expect things to be spilt in a supermarket from time to time. For example someone might pick up a carton of milk or a pot of yoghurt and end up dropping it on the floor. Other products might leak out of cartons or packets too. You could slip on something dry too – it doesn’t have to be wet to cause a problems. If a packet of rice were spilled over the floor you could easily end up being involved in one of the supermarket spillage accidents that occur each year.
While such accidents don’t crop up that often, they do happen when the circumstances are there to allow them to. The people working at the supermarket have a duty of care to make sure they provide a safe place for people to shop at. Part of this includes ensuring all spillages are cleaned up as quickly as possible.
Why do spillages cause accidents?
You think you’d spot a spillage on the floor, wouldn’t you? Yet in reality you may not see it at all. Your mind may be elsewhere, perhaps looking for a product, and the next think you know your feet go out from under you. The lack of awareness of slipping over means you could end up being unable to break your fall and you could hurt yourself quite easily in the process.
Accident Advice Helpline has heard about supermarket spillage accidents like this before. We always check the facts of each case because no two instances will ever be exactly the same. You might find you end up with injuries caused by slipping over on a spillage and those injuries could make living your daily life quite difficult.
How much could you claim?
Compensation can vary depending on the part (or parts) of the body that are affected by the accident. In addition you might find you are able to claim more if you are injured in a way that has a prolonged effect on your life. For example if you break a finger that heals, this would be very different from breaking a finger and losing all sensation in it from that moment on.
