Compensation for slipping in a restaurant

Eating out is supposed to be a pleasurable experience – but what sort of food are you in the mood for? Perhaps some sushi or Chinese food, or maybe it’s Mexican fajitas you’re craving? Wherever you decide to eat, the last thing you expect to happen is to be injured after slipping in a restaurant.

Slips, trips and falls are fairly common accidents and they have the potential to cause serious injury. If you’ve suffered an injury after slipping in a restaurant, you could claim personal injury compensation, provided it has been three years or less since your accident. You’ll want to choose a lawyer with experience handling personal injury claims – so pick Accident Advice Helpline, as we have 15 years’ specialist experience.

    Health and safety is important

Health and safety is definitely important in restaurants; and we’re not just talking about food hygiene and preventing food poisoning. Restaurant owners need to make sure their premises are safe too, so if you have suffered an injury after slipping in a restaurant, they could be held liable. Here are some of the types of incidents we have handled claims for in the past:

    • Slipping on a wet floor in the restaurant’s toilet
    • Slip on food or drink spillage in the main restaurant area
    • Slipping and falling downstairs due to a spillage
    • Slipping on a shiny floor surface – for example a laminate floor that has been polished using the wrong floor cleaning solution

It’s normal to feel guilty at the idea of making a personal injury claim, but you shouldn’t. The restaurant owner will have liability insurance in place which will payout in the event of a successful claim.

    What happens next?

If you’re injured after slipping in a restaurant, no matter how minor your injuries, you’ll need to report your accident to restaurant staff. They will record your accident in their book and may offer you some form of compensation such as a free meal or money off your next visit there.
