    Compensation payout received by Wigan man after contracting holiday illness

    An Egyptian holiday ended badly for a Wigan man in 2012 when he contracted Shigella, a diarrhoea bug, while he was away. Five days into a week-long holiday he was struck down by classic symptoms of a stomach upset. However, he continued to suffer once he returned home, leading to hospitalisation and treatment in the UK for his condition. He turned out to have contracted Shigella, an infection that can be caught when proper hygiene methods are not adhered to. Poorly prepared and cooked food may also harbour the bacteria.

    Upon returning home and being treated he contacted a lawyer who brought a successful claim for compensation on his behalf. When commenting on the experience the Wigan man stated he didn’t feel back to normal until several months after the infection.
