Guillain-Barre syndrome is a serious condition of the central nervous system usually caused by an infection or food poisoning. Your body’s immune system begins to attack the peripheral nervous system. If you have contracted Guillain-Barre syndrome from food poisoning, symptoms usually appear 2 to 4 weeks later, and can include:
- Muscle weakness
- Tingling, numbness and pain
- Unsteadiness and co-ordination problems
Symptoms usually begin in the feet and hands but can spread quickly to the arms and legs. It’s important to attend A & E to be diagnosed if you think you are suffering from Guillain-Barre syndrome from food poisoning. Tests such as a lumbar puncture and EMG test, which measures nerve and muscle function, will be carried out to make a diagnosis. In severe cases, you may need to be treated in intensive care, and treatments which target immune system antibodies are used, to prevent further damage to your peripheral nerves.
Whilst most people make a full recovery from Guillain-Barre syndrome, recovery can be slow and could take a year or more. During your recovery, you may need occupational therapy, physical therapy, counselling and speech and language therapy to ensure full rehabilitation.
