Compensation for food poisoning from a grocer

When you’re shopping at your local corner shop – whether you’re picking up something for dinner or just a pint of milk – do you ever stop to think about how clean the shop is? When we’re dashing in to buy something, we might not notice unhygienic conditions or dusty, dirty shelves. But these types of conditions should be cause for concern – they could lead to food poisoning or illness.

Food poisoning from a grocer isn’t all that common, but if you’re buying fresh food that has not been refrigerated properly – particularly meat and dairy – or other produce which has been left in a dirty, unhygienic environment, you run the risk of coming down with food poisoning from a grocer. For example, if the grocer’s store room has a pest infestation and they have been storing fresh produce or even baked goods such as bread here, your food may have been contaminated.

The good news is that if you’ve been struck down with food poisoning and believe your local grocer is to blame, you could make a claim for personal injury compensation. There’s a three-year time limit in place for all personal injury claims, so make sure you act quickly to avoid missing out.

    How do you feel?

The symptoms of food poisoning usually come on within 24 to 48 hours, but in some cases they could take days to appear – which means it could be hard figuring out what’s caused your food poisoning. You’re likely to suffer from nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea, and stomach cramps are also common.

If you’ve noticed unhygienic conditions in your local grocers, you may wish to report this to your local council’s environmental health department, who will investigate. Contact a personal injury lawyer to find out if you could claim compensation for your suffering.
