Compensation for falling in the street

Most of us go out into the street for one reason or another on most days of the week. It might be to walk to work or to the train station. It could be to go into town. Perhaps we’re going shopping. Whatever the reason might be, we rarely spend every second of that journey looking at the ground in front of us.

Some people end up having accidents when falling in the street through no fault of their own. Local councils have a responsibility to maintain the streets in their area, making sure both the pavements and the roads are always safe for people to use. If they do not do this and are negligent in their duty of care towards the people in the area, they might end up facing a compensation claim. This would be for injuries experienced during an accident that could reasonably have been avoided.

No one intends to fall while walking in the street but on some occasions it happens due to a slip or trip on a poor surface. When this occurs it can be extremely painful to recover from the injuries.

What kinds of accidents could you suffer if you end up falling in the street?

The injuries vary depending on the severity of the accident. for example if you are out jogging or running you might experience worse injuries because you are moving more quickly. However, even when walking it is possible to incur injuries such as fractures, bruises, strains and sprains. Ankles can easily rick over on unstable surfaces and hands and fingers can be damaged through trying to break an unexpected fall. Many people don’t realise there is a three-year window during which they can try to make a claim for such injuries if they have fallen through no fault of their own.
