A paddling pool in East Park that resulted in people from five families being struck down by the cryptosporidium bug has led to Hull City Council granting compensation to the affected families. A total of eight people were affected by the outbreak – three adults and five children. They will all receive compensation after contracting the bug when using the pool last summer.
The bug thrives in contaminated water and Public Health England investigated what had occurred. It turned out that the pool was not properly chlorinated. Furthermore some of the water used in the paddling pool did not go through the recirculation system. As such the conditions were present for the bug to spread and start affecting people. Symptoms included being sick, suffering from diarrhoea and experiencing fever and stomach ache.
While eight people are to receive compensation for the outbreak, it is estimated that around 70 people in all experienced symptoms of cryptosporidium to some degree. It has not yet been agreed how much compensation will be paid out to those affected, but this will be assessed and determined by a judge presiding over the case. Hopefully the outcome will draw a line under the experience for everyone – one that spoiled last summer for many.
