Falling ill or becoming injured on holiday is unfortunately a fairly common occurrence for British holidaymakers abroad. Sometimes illness and accident is simply bad luck, but other times such events are caused by the hotel or another aspect of your holiday package failing to adhere to health and safety standards.
If this is the case it is much more likely you will be eligible to claim compensation. If it can be shown that you are hurt due to negligence, it is only right that there may be some recourse for you financially.
When you take a trip overseas, you rightfully expect proper health and safety to be in place, and for a relaxing and enjoyable experience. Holidays can also be very expensive, with many families saving up all year for that one trip away together. If your holiday has been ruined and you believe negligence was a play, we may be able to help you.
Causes for accidents on holiday
There are a variety of reasons why an accident or illness might affect British holidaymakers abroad. In terms of claiming compensation, only those accidents or injuries that were sustained at the hotel or another part of the package holiday are considered, such as in a theme park that was part of your deal. Your injury or illness must be shown to be the fault of the hotel or other aspect of your holiday package, such as:
- Getting food poisoning from the hotel restaurant. This includes instances of undercooked food, food not being stored at correct temperatures and cross-contamination
- Getting a virus or bug from something the hotel has done, such as using unsterilised swimming pool water
- Falling or tripping in the hotel on something that should have been fixed, such as broken pavement
- An accident in a playground within the grounds of the hotel which was not suitably safe for children.
