    Repetitive strain injuries are a very real and considerably painful concern for millions of employers and staff up and down the country.

    As far as accidents at work go, repetitive strain injuries may not immediately leap to mind as the most dangerous. However, the fact that they build up over a period time means that the treatment and consequences can often be both lengthy and serious.

    What are repetitive strain injuries at work?

    Repetitive strain injury (RSI) is a term used to describe a wide range of painful conditions concerning the muscles, tendons and other soft tissues contained within the human body.

    It is mainly caused by the frequent, repetitive and excessive use of certain areas of the body. More often than not, it is related to a job or a hobby.

    One of the main problems that arise from suffering an RSI is that symptoms persist for a long time and therefore, the recovery time is often significantly longer than that of a normal strain.

    In terms of injuries at work, this means that periods of workers being out of action can be long enough to cause significant expense to the company, as well as pain to the member of staff involved.

    What are the main causes of repetitive strain injuries at work?

    Some of the people most at risk from suffering an RSI include:

    • People working with computers: Actions such as typing or moving a mouse are typical of the sort of movements that result in an RSI. Poor posture whilst sitting in an office chair can also be a contributory factor.
    • Manual labourers: The importance of posture when avoiding injuries on a construction site cannot be overstated. Furthermore, using excessive force or exerting unnatural amounts of effort can increase the chances of suffering a RSI.

    How can I limit the likelihood of suffering a repetitive strain injury at work?

    Fortunately, modern working environments have a number of health and safety guidelines in place to limit both the chances of accidents at work occurring and their severity. These include:

    • Guidance on things like sitting posture
    • Typing lessons
    • Regular breaks for those working on computers
    • Manual handling training
    • Assistance with heavy lifting
