Cocky drivers take ‘appalling chance’ with people’s lives

Cocky drivers take ‘appalling chance’ with people’s lives

New research shows countless overconfident and complacent motorists are putting others in danger. The survey by Brake and Direct Line found that while almost 700 of the 1,000 drivers have broken traffic laws, 99% of them still believe they are safe on the roads.

If you have been involved in an accident that was not your fault, then you could be eligible to make a car accident claim. Accident Advice Helpline would be happy to help you every step of the way.

    Dangerous drivers carry on regardless

More than a third of those polled said they flouted laws as they felt in control. By contrast, one in three motorists confessed to not concentrating behind the wheel. A tiny minority of drivers, 1%, were aware they were putting others in danger but continued to drive irresponsibly. One in 20 claims the majority of drivers are reckless and safe motorists are few and far between, while just one in 100 feels most drivers are safe.

Compliance with traffic laws ‘a must’

Brake deputy chief executive Julie Townsend is deeply concerned that a large proportion of drivers think they are not dangerous despite freely admitting to breaking laws. She has warned motorists who believe they can handle speeding, using a phone at the wheel or drink-driving that they are “fooling themselves” and “taking an appalling chance” with the lives of others.

“Traffic laws exist to protect people from death and injury, and staying within them is a fundamental responsibility for everyone who drives,” said Ms Townsend. Direct Line’s motor section head Rob Miles said: “Drivers continue to flout the rules of the road without realising the devastating impact their actions can have.”
