How to claim needlestick injury compensation

Needles are used in hospitals all the time, which means there is a real need to have safe procedures in place in these situations. If a nurse inadvertently catches themselves on a needle that was not disposed of properly, there is the potential to be made ill if anything is transferred from the needle to their blood supply.

Needless to say, needlestick injuries, as they are known, can be extremely worrying. While the injury itself is not usually severe, numerous conditions and illnesses could be caught from such an injury. This is the more worrying aspect of the situation.

Does a needlestick injury always involve a needle?

Not always – the term can also be used to describe an injury that is caused by a scalpel or another piece of sharp medical equipment that has not been disposed of in the proper manner. There should be strict protocols in place that prevent such injuries from happening in the first place. If this is not the case and you are injured by a needle or other sharp implement in a hospital setting, you may have a good case to make to get needlestick injury compensation.

Nurses are not the only people this might happen to, either. Anyone working in a hospital could potentially be at risk, including doctors and cleaners. Park keepers and cleaners in other situations could also be at risk if an area is known to be used for drug use, for example. Street cleaners and bin men could also potentially receive a similar injury.

Compensation for mental and physical distress

Obviously the site of a wound caused in this way will be sore and uncomfortable for some time afterwards. Yet the real concern is that of contracting a virus or illness that is carried in the blood. It may be some months before you can be certain you do not have such a virus – a period of time in which you may suffer mentally and psychologically because of what has occurred.
