Cycling is often touted as a great sport to get involved in if you want to get fit. Some people cycle to and from work every day, enabling them to get in some exercise no matter how they might exercise in other ways. Cycling is also something you can do on the roads and also off-road if you have a mountain bike.
Of course when you cycle regularly on the roads you are also potentially at risk of having an accident. You are more exposed and prone to injury as a cyclist. Even if you wear a helmet – as you should – you can still be badly hurt if you collide with another vehicle.
Accidents that result in injured cyclist compensation claims
There are situations where people end up getting compensation when they have been knocked off their bike by another vehicle. Everyone has a right to use the roads and if a car or other vehicle is driven in a negligent manner, causing a cyclist to be injured, there is a good chance the cyclist will be able to get compensation for any injuries they suffer.
The cyclist must observe all the rules of the road and act in accordance with the Highway Code. However, if they do this and the driver of another vehicle does not, causing them to be hurt in an accident, this might lead to a situation where compensation is warranted.
How badly can cyclists be hurt?
Some are lucky and manage to get away with cuts and scrapes and nothing more. Others break bones and a small number may receive serious injuries if they are involved in an accident with a car or other type of vehicle. Some cyclists have suffered life-changing injuries to their brain, spine and other parts of their body. These are the situations in which the greater amounts of compensation may be paid out.
