How to claim asbestos-related illness compensation

Most of us have heard about asbestos and the dangers it presents to our health. It was not always known how dangerous it was, however. Years ago it was used as a practical and useful material in many building projects. Today it still exists in some buildings and where this is the case, special rules and regulations are in force for dealing with it safely.

This wasn’t the case several decades ago. This is why people were working in situations where asbestos was present, with no idea of the potential hazard the asbestos presented to them in the long term.

Why might people have cause to make asbestos-related illness compensation claims?

It takes a long time before a disease related to asbestos exposure actually develops. For example many people have been exposed to asbestos some 30 or 40 years ago, and only now do they find out they have a disease related to that exposure. Diseases range from mesothelioma, a cancer that is associated only with asbestos exposure, to lung cancer, asbestosis and pleural plaques.

There were several types of asbestos in use years ago. These became more dangerous if they were broken or damaged in any way, because this led to fibres from the asbestos breaking off so they could potentially be inhaled into the lungs. Once there, they cannot be removed.

How could you proceed with a claim for asbestos-related illness compensation?

If you or someone in your family has been diagnosed with an illness that was caused by exposure to asbestos, it could relate to a job you did many years’ ago. This is why it is best to get in touch with a lawyer who has already won cases of a similar nature, to ensure you have the best chance to make a solid compensation claim.
