The City & Guilds Level 5 NVQ Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety Practice

The City & Guilds Level 5 NVQ Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety Practice

The City & Guilds Level 5 NVQ Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety Practice offered by the British Safety Council is designed for health and safety officers or practitioners in any industry. The course itself is completed over an 18 month period without assessment and is vital for those who have a responsibility to train or implement health and safety procedures in any place of work. This advanced NVQ course is designed to ensure that health and safety officers are able to implement health and safety procedures, policies and best practices in their place of work and is also available to ensure officers are competent in carrying out risk assessments and managing health and safety in the workplace. As it is based in the workplace, officers do not need to be off-site in order to carry out this training. Although health and safety officers should already be trained in how to implement risk assessments, accidents still have the potential to happen in any workplace despite the training available.

How is this course applied to construction?

Occupational health and safety is important in any industry but the construction industry carries some potentially dangerous risks. Working from height, working with dangerous machinery and working in poorly ventilated areas can all carry risks, which is why it is so important to control them. Health and safety practitioners have a responsibility to be aware of all risks and how to control them in order to help employees in this industry to stay safe on a daily basis. This means they must teach what they have learned to anyone who is at risk while on-site. Each potential hazard must be controlled so, for example, hard hats must be provided to everyone to prevent serious injury if someone slips, trips or falls. If an accident does occur and there is evidence of negligence (e.g. not providing the appropriate personal protective equipment) then you may be able to make a claim.
