Were you caught in a food poisoning epidemic?

How common is a food poisoning epidemic? While it is possible for one or two individuals to fall ill from eating food that has been contaminated with a virus or bacterium, it is also possible for an epidemic to affect many more people. Often, when this happens, the outbreak is eventually traced back to one outlet and one foodstuff that is found to be to blame.

An outbreak can affect dozens or even hundreds of people. Sometimes, the increased number of victims makes it easier to ascertain why they fell ill. It is a matter of finding the common denominator. For example, did they all eat at the same buffet? Did they all eat the same food from a burger outlet or supermarket? Once the evidence is gathered, the source of the outbreak is usually identified.

    Different bacteria and viruses

Different things have caused outbreaks of this kind in recent times. It is rare to hear about an epidemic like this, not because they are kept quiet but because they are incredibly uncommon. Most food retailers and outlets follow all the food safety laws and exceed the high standards set for them in law.

However, if standards did slip, and conditions were not as good as they should be, there is the potential for many people to fall ill if they have the same contaminated food from the same source. If this happened to you, you may be aware of what caused your illness. However, even if you’re unsure, it is still worth seeking professional information and support from a legal representative.
