A waste and recycling firm in Carmarthen has been fined for multiple safety failings after a visit from inspectors revealed a variety of uncontrolled hazards and safety issues. Various work activities were halted immediately as inspectors issued a total of eight notices to the site, run by Mekatek Ltd. The site was found to have unguarded dangerous machinery and areas contaminated by asbestos-containing materials, along with various other safety hazards. Workers were also at risk due to exposure to electrocution. The firm was prosecuted at Swansea Crown Court by the Health and Safety Executive.
During inspection, it was found that the site had a number of machines without suitable guards to prevent workers from being caught in the moving parts. In addition, workers were at risk of becoming trapped or falling from height due to an unsafe ‘man basket’ on a forklift truck. Exposed pipe lagging was found to contain asbestos materials, putting workers at risk of exposure, and there were electrical cables trailing through liquids, putting workers at risk of electrocution. Mekatek Ltd plead guilty to a range of health and safety offences and were fined £35,000 plus costs.
Safety failings at work
Workplace safety should be a top priority for employers in any environment, but it is essential in places like waste disposal and recycling plants. These places carry many risks and potential hazards which should be addressed and controlled by employers. Employees should be trained to use the machinery and vehicles they are working with, and should also be provided with safety tools, equipment and clothing where appropriate. If there are multiple safety failings of any kind, employees who sustain injuries could be entitled to compensation.
