    Weather and road traffic accidents

Rain, snow, fog and even low sun can cause serious road accidents if drivers do not adjust their speeds, and distances between them and the vehicle in front sufficiently. The pile-up depicted in this video is a clear example of this.

    Rain and road accident injuries

According to a British study (1998, Edwards), accidents causing slight injuries are more likely to occur during rain than accidents causing severe injuries. The author of the study puts this down to the fact that while poor visibility and reduced grip due to water on the road cause more accidents, the same factors cause drivers to slow down, resulting in car accident injuries being less severe.

Here, visibility is typically even poorer than in rain. The risk of accidents is further enhanced by the road surface being wet, a fact many drivers fail to consider ‘because it is only fog, not rain’. As a rule, drivers will slow down during such poor visibility and simultaneously reduce the distance to the vehicles in front of them.

    Video claim potential

In the accident shown here, an initial accident resulted in a number of cars ploughing into the already stationary vehicles. According to police attending the scene, it appears much of this carnage could have been avoided if drivers had been driving slower and at greater distances from one another.

    Responsibility assessment and claim potentials

It will be difficult to establish who exactly is responsible for what in this accident. In essence, there is a chance of every vehicle’s drivers/ passengers incurring injuries potentially claiming personal injury compensation from the driver of the vehicle hitting them from behind. At the same time, they in turn could be liable to pay injury compensation to the occupants of the car in front of them.
