What is the car accident claim time limit in the UK?

Most people are fully aware they would have an opportunity to try and claim some compensation if they were hurt in a car accident, providing of course they were not the cause of the accident. However, would you know what the car accident claim time limit in the UK is?

Not everybody does know the answer, so we thought we would provide it for you here. In the majority of cases involving adults who are making a claim, there is a three-year time limit in force. This three-year period runs from the date the accident takes place. So for example, if you had a car crash on 14th January 2015, you would have until that date in 2018 to begin your claim. Providing the claim is begun before this date, it doesn’t matter if it is not concluded until after the three-year period is completed.

Is there another type of car accident claim time limit in the UK?

The one major exception to the rule is where a child is injured in an accident. If the child is under the age of 18, a claim must be made within three years of their 18th birthday. This means if you’re in an accident with your two-year-old child, you have to make a personal claim for yourself within three years. However, as long as you claim for injuries suffered by your two-year-old before they turn 21, you can still have a valid claim.

This is the main thing to remember, but aside from that, the three-year period does still give you plenty of time to ensure you can claim when it suits you. It also gives you time to get over the experience before claiming if you like.

Knowing how to go about a claim of this nature can be difficult. After all, few people ever encounter the need to even think about it.
