After a serious accident it can be difficult to get back to living life as you did before; however, if you can get counselling for head trauma it can significantly improve your ability to readjust. It can also be advisable from a medical point of view, as ongoing professional support means any hidden problems caused by your injury are more likely to be detected. If a medical or psychiatric professional has recommended counselling for you, it is certainly something you can claim for.
Compensation claims: the basics
For a compensation claim to be valid it normally has to be made within three years of the accident happening and you need to have received immediate medical treatment. Treatment is particularly important in the case of head injury, as serious damage can sometimes be done with no obvious signs on the surface. If a doctor thinks you are at risk then you should have a scan to check for any problems, enabling you to receive help if necessary.
You are generally more likely to be successful with a compensation claim if you make it early, when it is easier to collect evidence. If your injury develops complications or turns out to be more serious than was initially thought, damages may be extended to take account of this and you will not lose out by claiming promptly.
Counselling and head trauma
Any kind of injury can leave you feeling frightened and disorientated, and you may benefit from counselling to help you to get back to normal. In the case of a head injury you may be left with other problems, such as mood swings or memory lapses, that complicate your day-to-day life. A specialist who is properly trained in providing counselling for head trauma can help you to cope with this. Unfortunately, though it is possible to get counselling on the NHS, it can be difficult to find a specialist in this way and you may have to wait in long queues. If you choose to go private and you keep your receipts, you may be able to claim for the cost as part of a compensation package.
